Here are some things you should know about shipping from Canada to Australia

Guide to Shipping Parcels to Australia

If you’re sending a parcel from Canada to Australia, there are a few things you should know before looking for a courier quote in order to avoid disappointment down the line. In this article, we’ll cover the customs documents you’ll need, Australian Duties and Taxes, how to package your parcel, and prohibited and restricted goods.

Customs Documents

Unless you are only sending documents, you will need to include a customs invoice with your parcel when shipping to Australia. This is also required when sending gifts or items you’ve sold on eBay. If a customs invoice is not included, your parcel won’t make it past your country border and you will have to pay return shipping charges to get it back.

Preparing customs documents is a common practice when shipping internationally. In Australia, the customs invoice is used to assess and inspect the imported goods and determine what duties and taxes deem applicable to the imported goods. It is important to note that it is not the courier company charging additional fees, it is the Australian Customs authorities. It is a part of their government’s import regulations and you must comply with these in order to ship a package to Australia.

When creating your shipping invoice you will need the following information:

  • The shipper’s address
  • The receiver’s address
  • A description of each item you are shipping
  • The value of each item, along with the total shipment value
  • The reason for export (sold goods, personal effects, returned for repair, samples, promotional items)

Also, if the exported goods are valued at CAD $2,000 or more you will need to include a Canadian Export Declaration B13A.

Australian Duties and Taxes

The Australian Customs authorities will determine the duties and taxes to apply to your parcel based on the value of the goods, the goods description, and the reason for export. As an example, goods that are sent as gifts or personal effects will have less duties and taxes applied than goods sold for re-sale.

Customs will determine the duty amount payable for each item you are sending to Australia. Different items will have different levels of duty and taxes applied. Each product you send will have a tariff classification which will be used to determine the duties and taxes applied. When sending high-value items you should research which tariff classification your items belong to so you can correctly classify them, potentially saving you money in the event they would have been classified incorrectly.

If the package you’re shipping to Australia has a total declared value less than the listed “de minimis value” amount, then duties and taxes will not apply. However certain goods may be subject to other types of fees or taxes in Australia. The “de minimus value” is:

De minimis Value for Duty: 1,000 AUD*
De minimis Value for Tax: 1,000 AUD*

*excluding alcohol and tobacco where duty/tax apply

Packaging Your Parcel

Australia has some of the world’s most amazing natural habitats and the Australian government goes to great lengths to protect those habitats and their environment. Many products, goods, and even some packaging materials are strictly prohibited to use when sending packages to Australia.

In order to avoid any issues when importing goods into Australia be sure to steer clear of the following packaging materials:

  • Egg cartons
  • Wooden boxes (all wood boxes, crates or pallets must be fumigated, and be accompanied by a fumigation certificate for entry into Australia).
  • Cardboard boxes that have been used to hold fruit, vegetables or meat
  • Dried plant material
  • Straw material

Prohibited and Restricted Goods

When sending items to Australia or any country you should check their prohibited and restricted goods list. As a general rule, most perishable foods, medicines, cosmetics, wooden objects, plants, and animal products are classified as restricted or prohibited. Items that are restricted can still be sent but may require the receiver to obtain a permit or import license before the shipment is sent.

Common items that you won’t be able to send by courier:

  • Aerosols
  • Dairy products
  • Animal furs
  • Ivory
  • Perishable food items
  • Animals
  • Cash
  • Nail varnish
  • Perfume
  • Plants
  • Tobacco
  • Plant seeds
