Key Points
FedEx can promise a parcel delivery from Canada to New Zealand that ranges from two to six business days, and as expected the shorter the time, the more the cost. As to a parcel’s specific price, that comes down to its size, weight, and other incidental delivery fees – fuel surcharge, oversize fee, and insurance.
But whatever the cost for parcel delivery to New Zealand, expect it to be surprisingly high; New Zealand is far away and inflation has affected shipping just like everything else. So, all the more reason to use Secureship, whose bulk buying power with FedEx and others can save you up to half of your shipping fees.

Suppose you want to ship a medium-sized box of 5 kg to Auckland, New Zealand from Toronto International Airport. By using Secureship’s online estimator, you can see below how expensive shipping is, but also how much Secureship can save you with carriers like FedEx, Purolator, and UPS.
Another way of saving shipping costs is to switch from an air freight service as offered above to sea freight. The downside is a shipment could take up to three months to reach New Zealand.
Increasing a parcel’s weight increases its cost of transport, and it is very unlikely that you as the shipper will be able to change that. However, reducing the size of the box could reduce the shipping cost even if the weight stays the same. And the reason for that is dimensional weight (also known as billable weight).
Couriers measure a box’s dimensions, multiply them, and divide by a factor (139 if measurements are Imperial; 5,000 if using the metric system). This new number is compared to the actual weight of the goods and whichever is higher dictates the cost of shipping.
So, to give a silly yet simple example, one kilogram of sand will ship for less than one kilogram of inflated beach balls.
Shipping may potentially involve extra shipping fees. Some can be avoided while others cannot.
The fuel surcharge is part of the shipping cost and is unavoidable as it is calculated as a percentage of the basic transportation costs. It is also a variable as it will rise or fall with the global price of energy.
As noted earlier, increasing the weight or size of a shipment increases the shipping costs. But when a parcel is heavier or bigger than set thresholds, an oversize fee is applied.
For example, FedEx will apply an oversize fee if a parcel is heavier than 68 kg, longer than 274 cm, or have a length + girth* measurement greater than 419 cm.
As of 2024, the FedEx oversize fee for each parcel is $102 CAD.
*Length + girth = (L + 2W + 2H)
Shippers often buy parcel insurance against damage or loss. And others calculate that the cost is greater than the risk.
However, if you do buy insurance, be advised certain goods are uninsurable, and they include:
What FedEx charges to ship from Canada to New Zealand can vary widely based on how quickly the shipment arrives, its size and weight, and several other factors such as fuel surcharge, oversize fee, and insurance.
But as one can imagine, New Zealand’s far distance from Canada makes shipping expensive, even for small parcels.
So, all Canadian shippers should know about Secureship when shipping from Canada to New Zealand. Its shipping estimator provides its clients with at least half-a-dozen options of carriers, delivery times, and prices. And because of Secureship’s bulk buying power with FedEx and other carriers, it can save its customers up to 50% on their shipping costs.
