Key Points
The cheapest way to ship a package from Canada to Spain is by surface transport, aka as sea freight; but the cost is time – perhaps a month or more for delivery. And in today’s world, many opt for the more expensive air freight services; however, when you do, there is an easy way to save a lot on shipping – Secureship, Canada’s favorite shipping broker. And as importantly, Secureship’s platform is easy-to-use and quick – you can have a series of shipping estimates within minutes, which could save you up to half the price on a shipment.
Secureship also simplifies for you the process of preparing a shipment’s paperwork, and can advise you on the duties and taxes Spanish customs will apply to the shipped goods.
Table of Contents
During its long service to Canadian shippers, Secureship has established bulk buying agreements with carriers like Purolator, FedEx, and UPS. So, when we act as your broker, we pass those savings on to you, and depending on the circumstances, you could save 50%, and sometimes more, from a carrier’s retail rate.
Beyond that, a simple truism in the shipping business is that you pay for speed, so by extending delivery times – even by a day or two – may substantially lower the shipping rate.
When you get an estimate from Secureship, it will show up on your screen as you see below. Note that Secureship can save you 47% from Canada Post’s standard rate for a 10 kg parcel from Montreal to Madrid.
And as the rest of the estimates show below, Secureship finds you way more than two shipping options, and within those, you are bound to find one that suits your budget.
As part of the EU, Spain accepts most Canadian shipments at a zero or very low duty rate under the CETA commercial pact. There are, however, a few exceptions:
But if the total value of a shipment is less than €150 (about $235 CAD as of July 2025), then no duties will be applied to the shipment.
Spain applies a value added tax (VAT) to incoming goods to its territory, typically at a rate of 21%; however, certain goods will incur a reduced rate of 10% and others a highly reduced rate of 4%.
One big difference between the VAT and duties, is that there is no de minimis value, i.e. a value below which no VAT is collected. Therefore, all items regardless of their value are subject to VAT.
Shipping by sea freight is the cheapest way to get a package from Canada to Spain, but at a minimum it could take a month for it to be delivered. So, air transportation has become a common choice for shippers, and there is no shortage of choices. And that’s how Canada’s Secureship can be a big help – its online estimator is efficient and effective at finding you numerous options with FedEx, UPS, and Purolator; and best of all, Secureship’s bulk buying agreements with them could save you upwards of 50% of a carrier’s standard rate.
And when shipping from Canada to Spain, be advised of custom duties and taxes (VAT – 21%, in particular), which Secureship has summarised for you on its website.
