DHL Weight and Size Limits

Exceeding a limit can trigger surcharges or get your shipment refused. Here are the key numbers.

⚖️
70 kg
Max piece weight (150 lb)
📦
3,000 kg
Max shipment (6,600 lb)
📏
300 cm
Max piece length (118 in)

The network does not accept individual pieces over 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) or 300 cm (118 in) in length. Any piece over 70 kg (150 lb) must be shipped on a pallet. A piece that exceeds a scale or volumetric weight of 70 kg (150 lb) triggers an Overweight Piece surcharge; oversized pieces and non-stackable pallets carry their own fees. See our DHL Surcharges guide.

Dimensional Weight (Cubing)

DHL charges whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight, using the standard IATA method. To calculate volumetric weight, multiply length × width × height for each piece, then divide by the factor for your unit of measurement:

DHL volumetric weight formula: L × W × H ÷ 5,000 (cm) or ÷ 139 (in)
Measured in centimetres ÷ 5,000
Measured in inches ÷ 139
📦 Example: A 40 × 30 × 30 cm box = 36,000 cm³. Volumetric weight = 36,000 ÷ 5,000 = 7.2 kg. If the box weighs only 4 kg on the scale, you're billed at the higher 7.2 kg volumetric weight.

When you quote through Secureship, volumetric weight is applied automatically, so the rate you see is the rate you pay. For a full explanation, see our Dimensional Weight Guide.

Save on DHL shipping

How to Save on DHL Shipping

What you pay for DHL Express depends on how you access it and how you pack. Here are the most effective ways to cut costs.

💰
Use Group Buying Power
Secureship aggregates volume from thousands of businesses to negotiate group rates with DHL. Even low-volume shippers save versus retail. No DHL account required.
📦
Right-Size Your Packaging
DHL bills the greater of actual or volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5,000 in cm). Every extra centimetre of empty box space can cost you, so use the smallest box that safely fits your item.
🌍
Match the Service to the Deadline
DHL Express Worldwide (end of next business day) costs less than the timed 9:00 and 10:30 services. Only pay for a guaranteed morning delivery when you actually need it.
🧾
Get Your Customs Paperwork Right
For international shipments, incomplete invoices or addresses trigger clearance delays and correction fees. A complete commercial invoice and an electronically produced label avoid Address Correction and Data Entry surcharges.
🔍
Compare Carriers on Every Shipment
DHL wins on many international routes, but not all. For domestic Canadian parcels, Purolator or Canada Post is often cheaper. Compare here before you ship.

How to Ship with DHL via Secureship

No DHL account needed. Access DHL Express's international lineup at group rates through Secureship in three steps.

1
Weigh & Measure
Weigh and measure each piece. DHL bills the greater of actual or volumetric weight, so accurate dimensions mean an accurate rate.
2
Quote & Book
Enter your shipment in Secureship's calculator to compare DHL against other carriers, then book. The label and DHL waybill are generated for you.
3
Add Documents & Ship
For cross-border parcels, attach a commercial or proforma invoice. Drop off at a DHL Service Point or schedule a pickup, then track everything from one dashboard.

Understanding DHL Pricing, Customs & Duties

A DHL quote is built from a base rate (weight, destination zone 1–14, and speed), plus any optional services and surcharges such as fuel. For cross-border shipments, duties and taxes are assessed by customs from your commercial or proforma invoice. They are billed to the receiver by default, or to you via Duty Tax Paid. When you quote through Secureship, applicable surcharges are included in the displayed rate.

The fuel surcharge changes on a published index, so we don't print a fixed percentage here. For a full fee breakdown see our DHL Surcharges guide, and for duties and clearance see DHL Customs & Duties. For budgeting and live pricing, see DHL Shipping Rates.

When to Choose DHL Over Other Carriers

No single carrier wins every shipment. DHL is best known for international express, but it also ships within Canada, so it is worth comparing on domestic routes too, not just cross-border. Here is where DHL tends to shine, and when another carrier may be the better call.

Choose DHL When
  • Shipping internationally: 220+ countries and territories through a single integrated network
  • Time-definite delivery matters: before 09:00, 10:30, or noon options, each with a money-back guarantee
  • Customs-heavy shipments: door-to-door clearance, MyGTS landed-cost estimates, and duty-billing options
  • Fast cross-border express: end-of-next-business-day delivery to most destinations
Consider Alternatives When
  • Lightweight domestic parcels: Canada Post is often the cheapest option, so compare it against DHL before you ship
  • Heavy freight over 3,000 kg: beyond the DHL Express network, where a dedicated freight service fits better
  • Budget, non-urgent shipments: economy ground services may undercut international express

The smartest approach: compare carriers on every shipment. For head-to-head breakdowns, see DHL vs FedEx and DHL vs UPS.

Frequently Asked Questions About DHL Shipping

What is DHL Express?

DHL Express is a Time Definite International (TDI) courier service: secure, door-to-door delivery of documents and parcels to and from virtually every country and territory, with full track-and-trace. Its flagship product, DHL Express Worldwide, delivers by the end of the next possible business day to 220+ countries and territories. You can access DHL Express rates without your own DHL account through Secureship.

How does DHL calculate shipping cost?

DHL prices each shipment as base rate + optional services + surcharges. The base rate depends on weight, destination zone (1–14), and speed. DHL charges the greater of actual or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height ÷ 5,000 (cm) or ÷ 139 (in) per piece. Enter your exact dimensions in Secureship's calculator to see the real billable weight and rate.

How long does DHL take to deliver?

DHL Express Worldwide targets delivery by the end of the next possible business day. Time-definite services deliver before 09:00, 10:30, or 12:00 noon the next business day and carry a money-back guarantee. Exact transit time depends on the origin-destination lane, so check your specific route in Secureship's calculator before you ship.

Does DHL deliver on weekends?

DHL offers Saturday Delivery to key cities in more than 70 countries, and Saturday Pickup for smaller shipments (up to 25 kg) at selected locations where Saturday is not a normal working day. Availability varies by location, so confirm weekend service for your route when you book.

What are DHL Express weight and size limits?

DHL Express Worldwide accepts pieces up to 70 kg (150 lb) and shipments up to 3,000 kg (6,600 lb). The network does not accept individual pieces over 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) or 300 cm (118 in) in length. Any piece over 70 kg must be shipped on a pallet. Timed services (9:00 and 10:30) are limited to 25 kg (55 lb) per piece.

How are DHL duties and taxes charged?

For cross-border non-document shipments, customs authorities use your commercial or proforma invoice to assess duties and taxes. By default these are billed to the receiver; with Duty Tax Paid, DHL can bill the shipper or a third party instead. DHL also charges a customs-clearance service fee when it prepares the entry. You can estimate duties before shipping with DHL's MyGTS tool. See our DHL Customs & Duties guide for the full breakdown.

What is the DHL fuel surcharge?

DHL applies a fuel surcharge as a percentage of transportation and additional charges. It is set by an index based on U.S. Gulf Coast (USGC) jet-fuel spot prices reported by the U.S. Department of Energy, and the percentage is adjusted regularly. Because the current rate changes, always check the live figure on DHL Express Canada's surcharge page, or quote through Secureship, where applicable surcharges are built into the rate you see.

How many countries does DHL ship to?

DHL Express serves 220+ countries and territories through a single integrated network, supported by 500+ airports and 295+ aircraft (figures approximate, end of 2024). Its import product reaches the same 220+ countries, including Third Country shipments between two other countries.

Do I need a DHL account to ship?

No. You can ship with DHL Express without your own account by using a multi-carrier platform like Secureship, which provides access to DHL rates through its group buying power, with no DHL contract or minimum volume required. You just need a free Secureship account.

How do I track a DHL shipment?

Every DHL waybill is individually numbered and scanned throughout its journey, so you get full track-and-trace. Track via MyDHL+, the DHL Express mobile app, or DHL's 24/7 Digital Assistant. When you ship through Secureship, tracking for every carrier lives in one dashboard.
