Purolator Weight and Size Limits

Exceeding a limit can trigger surcharges or get your shipment refused. Here are the key numbers.

⚖️
150 lbs
Max weight (68 kg)
📏
108 in
Max length (274 cm)
📦
165 in
Max length + girth (419 cm)

Packages over 50 lbs (23 kg) or with the longest side exceeding 48 inches (122 cm) on longest side trigger an Oversized surcharge ($27.60 per piece). Residential deliveries over 70 lbs (32 kg) incur an additional $50.00 per piece Residential Heavyweight fee.

Dimensional Weight (Cubing)

Purolator charges whichever is greater: actual weight or cubic (dimensional) weight. To calculate: convert your package dimensions to cubic feet (L × W × H ÷ 1,728 in inches), then multiply by the cube factor for your service:

Dimensional weight formula: L × W × H ÷ 1,728 × cube factor
Express (air network) × 15 lb per cubic foot
Ground (non-air) × 12.4 lb per cubic foot
📦 Example: A 24″ × 18″ × 12″ box = 3 cubic feet. Via Express (air): 3 × 15 = 45 lbs cubic weight. Via Ground: 3 × 12.4 = 37.2 lbs. If the box only weighs 10 lbs on the scale, you'd be billed at the higher cubic weight.

When you quote through Secureship, cubing is applied automatically so the rate you see is the rate you pay. For a full explanation, see our Dimensional Weight Guide.

Save on Purolator shipping

How to Save on Purolator Shipping

The price you pay for Purolator shipping depends on how you access their services. Here are the most effective ways to cut costs.

💰
Use Group Buying Power
Secureship aggregates volume from thousands of businesses to negotiate group rates with Purolator. Even low-volume shippers save 30–40% versus retail on Express, Ground, and cross-border services. No Purolator account required.
📦
Right-Size Your Packaging
Dimensional weight pricing means every extra centimetre of box space costs you money. Use the smallest box that safely fits your item.
🚛
Choose Ground When Express Isn't Needed
Purolator Ground costs significantly less and delivers in 1–3 business days within the same province. For many routes, that's barely slower than Express.
🏢
Ship to Commercial Addresses
The residential delivery surcharge is $4.65 per package and adds up fast. Use a business address or direct to a Purolator access point to avoid the fee entirely.
🔍
Compare Carriers on Every Shipment
Purolator wins on many Canadian routes, but not all. For lightweight packages under 5 lbs, Canada Post often wins. For some cross-border routes, FedEx or UPS may be cheaper.

When to Choose Purolator Over Other Carriers

No single carrier wins every shipment. Here's where Purolator shines — and when to consider alternatives.

Choose Purolator When
  • Shipping within Canada — broadest domestic reach of any private courier
  • Delivery windows matter — 9AM, 10:30AM, noon, end-of-day, and evening options
  • Remote and northern areas — Canada Post partnership provides last-mile access where other couriers can't reach
  • Evening residential delivery — 5:30–9:00 PM options, ideal for B2C
Consider Alternatives When
  • Packages under 5 lbs — Canada Post is often cheapest for lightweight residential
  • International shipping — FedEx and UPS have deeper global networks
  • Budget domestic ground — GLS, Loomis, and Canpar sometimes undercut on Ontario/Quebec routes

The smartest approach: compare carriers on every shipment. For head-to-head breakdowns, see Purolator vs Canada Post, Purolator vs FedEx, and Purolator vs UPS.

Frequently Asked Questions About Purolator Shipping

Does Purolator charge by weight or size?

Purolator uses cubing (dimensional weight) pricing. They convert your package to cubic feet (L × W × H ÷ 1,728 in inches) and multiply by a cube factor: ×15 for Express (air) or ×12.4 for Ground. They charge whichever is greater — actual weight or cubic weight. This means oversized but lightweight packages may cost more than expected. Use Secureship's shipping calculator to see your exact cost based on both weight and dimensions.

Is it cheaper to ship with Purolator or Canada Post?

It depends on the shipment. Canada Post is typically cheaper for lightweight packages under 5 lbs, especially for residential deliveries. Purolator is often more competitive for heavier packages, business-to-business shipments, and when you need guaranteed delivery times. The best approach is to compare rates for your specific shipment using Secureship's rate comparison tool — you can save up to 75% versus going directly to either carrier.

How do I get a shipping estimate from Purolator?

You can get a Purolator shipping estimate by visiting Purolator's website directly, or more easily, by using Secureship's shipping calculator. With Secureship, you get instant Purolator rates alongside quotes from FedEx, UPS, Canada Post, and other carriers — all in one place. Plus, Secureship's group buying power means you pay significantly less than Purolator's published retail rates.

Who has the cheapest shipping rates in Canada?

There is no single cheapest carrier for every shipment. The cheapest option depends on your package weight, dimensions, origin, destination, and delivery speed. For lightweight residential packages, Canada Post is often cheapest. For heavier business shipments, Purolator or UPS may offer better value. The most effective way to find the cheapest rate every time is to compare all carriers simultaneously using Secureship.

Do I need a Purolator account to ship?

You can ship with Purolator without your own account by using a third-party shipping platform like Secureship. Secureship provides access to Purolator's services at deeply discounted rates through its group buying power. You just need a free Secureship account to get started — no Purolator account or contract required.

Does Purolator deliver on weekends?

Purolator does not deliver on Sundays. Saturday delivery is available in select areas for an additional fee. Standard pickup and delivery services operate Monday through Friday. Purolator also offers a Same Day Saturday service in Canada for an additional fee.

How long does Purolator take to deliver?

Purolator Express offers guaranteed next business day delivery with options for 9AM, 10:30AM, noon, or end-of-day delivery. Purolator Ground takes 1–3 business days within the same province and 2–7 business days for cross-province shipments. All domestic and international deliveries are guaranteed and time-definite, or your money is returned.

What are the weight and size limits for Purolator?

Purolator Express and Ground services accept packages up to 150 lbs (68 kg) per piece. Packages over 50 lbs trigger an Oversized surcharge ($27.60/piece), and residential deliveries over 70 lbs incur a Residential Heavyweight fee ($50/piece). Maximum length is 108 inches (274 cm), and maximum length + girth is 165 inches (419 cm). Packages exceeding 165 inches total size are subject to a $1,000 Over Maximum Limit surcharge. For heavier or larger items, Purolator Freight services are available.

What is the Purolator fuel surcharge?

Purolator applies a fuel surcharge to every shipment, calculated as a percentage of the base transportation rate. For courier services, the surcharge is set monthly based on the 4-week average gasoline price reported by Natural Resources Canada. As of February 2026, the courier fuel surcharge is 23.5%. The rate is updated on the first Monday of each month and posted on Purolator's website approximately two weeks before the effective date.

Can Purolator ship internationally?

Yes, Purolator offers international shipping to 210+ countries and territories. Purolator Express International provides guaranteed second business day delivery with time-definite options (9AM, 10:30AM, 12PM) for select destinations. For the United States, dedicated Purolator Express U.S. and Ground U.S. services are available with next business day and 2+ business day delivery respectively.
