Key Points

FedEx ships to every habitable continent and to virtually every country therein. So, no worries about using FedEx for your shipments from Canada to Italy. However, like other private carriers, its rates for overnight deliveries can be quite expensive. While that can be mitigated by increasing transit times, another sure fire way of lowering your shipping costs is to engage shipping broker Secureship. With its arrangements with FedEx, Purolator, and UPS, you can knock off at least 50% from a carrier’s standard price. But in spite of that, your parcel may incur other fees for things such as Saturday services, fuel surcharge, additional handling, and if it is oversized. Read on for details and what you might be able to do to mitigate those costs.

Secureship can provide cheaper shipping with name brand carriers through long established bulk shipping agreements. And the savings they generate get passed on to you, which is typically a minimum of 50%, but can reach 70%.
When Secureship started out, shipping was a time-consuming affair because it took forever to find the best deal. But thanks to its intuitive platform, it takes you but a minute from entering your details until half-a-dozen or so shipping options appear on your screen, an example of which you can see below.
So with Secureship, arranging shipping eliminates hassles that would otherwise occupy valuable hours that are better spent running your business.
The shipping estimate above gives you a sense of how expensive it is to ship even a modestly sized parcel (five kilograms).
However, there are other fees that may be applied to your shipment for certain services or circumstances.
Parcel pick ups and deliveries on Saturdays incur an extra fee, which while convenient, can be avoided if not absolutely necessary.
At this writing, fuel surcharges are particularly poignant.
Carriers include this surcharge as part of the shipping rate (and make it available for you to see), but they fluctuate with the price of oil.
Additional handling charges are applied when goods are packaged in something other than a cardboard box, i.e. wood, plastic, metal. So, unless the nature of the goods require enclosure in a non-cardboard container, a sturdy cardboard box will prevent this surcharge.
Surcharges apply when packages exceed industry standard limits. As well, shipping prohibited goods also incurs extra fees, and examples of these are shown below.
While fees vary slightly from one carrier to another, the following taken from UPS gives you an idea of the range for 2025.
| Type of parcel | Amount (CAD) | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Large package | $117.70 – commercial $129.85 – residential | - Length + Girth > 330 cm - Minimal billable weight of 41 kg |
| Over maximum limits | $1,380.75/package | Over 68 kg or longer than 274 cm; girth greater than 419 cm |
| Prohibited item | $315/package | See below* |
* Any restricted or prohibited goods not prepared in compliance with UPS policies and procedures
Any Canadian resident can easily ship to Italy from Canada with FedEx, and the carrier offers a range of services that vary widely in price. And that is largely due to delivery times – the slower, the less expensive. But you may still find those rates very high, and so it is definitely worth your time to use online broker Secureship to find you the cheapest deal with FedEx and other carriers. However, shippers need to be aware that depending on a parcel’s size or other delivery service, extra fees may be applied to the shipping rate. For example, you may consider avoiding Saturday pickups and deliveries and only ship goods in cardboard boxes as other materials incur a handling fee.
