What Is Canada Post?

Canada Post is Canada's national postal service and the country's largest parcel delivery network. It serves more than 17.8 million addresses in urban, rural and remote locations, handles nearly 5.9 billion pieces of mail, parcels and messages a year, and employs nearly 60,400 people.

17.8M+ Canadian addresses served
5,800 post offices, over half of them rural
21,400+ delivery routes across Canada

That reach is the reason to consider Canada Post, and it is genuinely hard to match: no private carrier in Canada delivers to as many addresses, and more than half of its roughly 5,800 post offices are in rural areas.

Reach on that scale changes what "delivered" means, and it is the one thing to understand before you ship with Canada Post. More than 6.1 million Canadian addresses are served by community mailboxes rather than door delivery, and nearly 22,000 lockers serve apartment and condominium buildings. So depending on the address and the size of the parcel, delivery may mean it is placed in a community mailbox or building locker, left as a safe drop, or taken to a post office with a notice card left behind. All of those count as a completed delivery.

You do not need a commercial Canada Post account to get competitive parcel rates. Platforms like Secureship negotiate group pricing normally reserved for high-volume shippers and pass it on to businesses of any size.

Canada Post parcel services

Canada Post Parcel Services

Domestically, Canada Post runs four parcel services. The important difference between them is not only speed: Priority, Xpresspost and Expedited Parcel carry the On-Time Delivery Guarantee, and Regular Parcel does not. Canada Post states that except where the guarantee applies, all delivery standards are estimates only and are not guaranteed.

Domestic serviceDelivery standardGuaranteeTracking
PriorityNext day local, next day to 1 to 3 days nationallyOn-Time Delivery Guarantee includedIncluded
XpresspostNext day local, 2 to 3 days nationallyOn-Time Delivery Guarantee includedIncluded
Expedited Parcel1 to 2 days local, 2 to 8 days nationallyOn-Time Delivery Guarantee includedIncluded
Regular Parcel1 to 3 days local, 4 to 10 days nationallyNo guarantee, estimates onlyIncluded

For parcels leaving Canada, the line-up splits between the United States and the rest of the world. Delivery standards below are Canada Post's published figures in business days, measured to the day delivery was first attempted.

US and international serviceDelivery standardGuaranteeTracking
Xpresspost - USA2 and 3 business daysOn-Time Delivery Guarantee includedIncluded, signature at no charge
Expedited Parcel - USA4 to 7 business daysNo guarantee, estimates onlyIncluded
Tracked Packet - USA4 to 7 business days, under 2 kgNo guarantee, estimates onlyIncluded
Xpresspost - International4 to 7 business days for most destinationsNo guarantee, estimates onlyIncluded, signature at no charge
International Parcel (Air)6 to 10 business daysNo guarantee, estimates onlyVaries by destination
International Parcel (Surface)4 to 12 weeksNo guarantee, estimates onlyVaries by destination
Tracked Packet - International6 to 10 business days, under 2 kgNo guarantee, estimates onlyIncluded

One number there deserves a second look. International Parcel (Surface) is 4 to 12 weeks, which is a shipping timeframe rather than a courier one. It can be the cheapest way to move something heavy and non-urgent overseas, but three months is a real possibility, not a worst case. Compare Canada Post rates against UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Purolator to see what a faster option actually costs on your route, and see our Canada Post Services guide for the full service breakdown.

Canada Post weight and size limits

Canada Post Weight and Size Limits

Canada Post's parcel ceiling is lower than most shippers expect, and exceeding it is expensive rather than merely inconvenient. Here are the domestic per-parcel limits.

30 kg
Max parcel weight (66 lb)
2 m
Max any single dimension
3 m
Max length + girth

Above 22.7 kg (50 lb) a parcel must carry an Overweight Parcel sticker. Beyond the limits above it is out of spec, which carries a far steeper surcharge than merely being oversized. Those are two different penalties with two different thresholds, and our Canada Post Surcharges guide sets out both.

International limits are tighter still in places. International Parcel caps any single dimension at 1.5 m rather than 2 m, and Small Packet and Tracked Packet stop at 2 kg. Some destinations set maximum weights below 30 kg and refuse oversized items altogether, so the destination decides as much as the service does.

Dimensional Weight (Cubing)

Canada Post calls dimensional weight the "volumetric equivalent of actual weight" and bills whichever is greater, actual or volumetric. The formula is cubic volume divided by a density factor, and the factor changes by service:

Priority, Xpresspost, Expedited Parcel, and all US and international services ÷ 5,000 cm³ / ÷ 139 in³
Regular Parcel ÷ 6,000 cm³ / ÷ 166 in³
📦 Canada Post's own two examples, both on a 100 × 60 × 20 cm parcel (120,000 cm³). On Xpresspost, 120,000 ÷ 5,000 = a volumetric equivalent of 24, so an 8 kg parcel is priced at 24. On Regular Parcel, the same box is 120,000 ÷ 6,000 = 20, so a 26 kg parcel is priced at its actual 26 kg instead. Volumetric equivalent does not always win: whichever number is higher is the one you pay.

A higher density factor produces a lower result, so Regular Parcel, the cheapest domestic service, is actually the more forgiving one on dimensions. If you assumed the premium tiers were more generous about box size, it is the other way round.

Measure length, width and height where each is greatest, which Canada Post defines as the smallest box that would entirely contain the parcel. When you quote through Secureship, the correct factor is applied automatically for the service you pick.

Save on Canada Post shipping

How to Save on Canada Post Shipping

What you pay depends on how you access Canada Post, how you pack, and which service you pick. Here are the levers that actually move the price.

💰
Use Group Buying Power
Secureship aggregates volume from thousands of businesses to negotiate group rates. Low-volume shippers get pricing they could not reach on their own, with no commercial account required.
📦
Right-Size Your Packaging
Canada Post bills the greater of actual weight or volumetric equivalent, so empty space in the box costs money. Note the density factor differs by service, and Regular Parcel gets the more forgiving one. See our Canada Post Shipping Rates guide for how a parcel price is built.
📋
Drop the Guarantee You Do Not Need
Regular Parcel is the only domestic tier without the On-Time Delivery Guarantee, and it still includes tracking. If the delivery date is genuinely flexible, that is the cheapest way through the network. If it is not, Expedited Parcel is the first tier where the date becomes a commitment.
🚚
Watch the Two Size Penalties
An oversized parcel triggers an additional handling surcharge. An out-of-spec parcel, meaning one past the hard ceilings, triggers a much larger one. Measuring before you ship is the cheapest thing on this list.
🔍
Compare Carriers on Every Shipment
Canada Post wins on reach and on rural or remote destinations, where it prices distance into the base rate rather than adding a separate remote-area surcharge. On heavy parcels, or anything needing a weekend delivery, another carrier will usually be the answer. Compare here before you ship.

When to Choose Canada Post Over Other Carriers

No single carrier wins every shipment, and Canada Post's strengths and limits are unusually clear-cut. Here is where it is the right call, and where it is not.

✓ Choose Canada Post When
  • Reach is the whole argument: more than 17.8 million Canadian addresses across urban, rural and remote locations, which no private carrier matches
  • Rural and remote destinations: over half of Canada Post's roughly 5,800 post offices are in rural areas, and distance is priced into the base rate rather than added as a separate remote-area surcharge
  • Tracking on every domestic tier: online tracking, plus delivery updates by email and text, are included even on Regular Parcel at no additional charge
  • Lighter parcels on a budget: Regular Parcel also gets the more forgiving volumetric density factor, so a bulky but light box can cost less than you would expect
↔ Consider Alternatives When
  • Anything heavy: Canada Post stops at 30 kg (66 lb) per parcel, while UPS, Purolator and FedEx each accept up to 68 kg (150 lb), more than double
  • You need weekend delivery: Canada Post delivers Monday to Friday only and states it cannot offer affordable weekend parcel delivery. UPS delivers Saturday residential in parts of Canada at no extra fee, and Purolator and FedEx will deliver Saturday for a charge
  • The delivery date has to be a commitment: Regular Parcel carries no On-Time Delivery Guarantee, and Canada Post states that outside the guarantee all delivery standards are estimates only
  • A guaranteed morning arrival: Canada Post publishes no domestic product with a stated clock-time deadline, where Purolator publishes guaranteed 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. options

The weight ceiling is the clearest dividing line in the whole comparison. Canada Post stops at 30 kg per parcel where UPS, Purolator and FedEx each accept up to 68 kg, so anything genuinely heavy is not a Canada Post shipment. The sensible approach is to compare carriers on every shipment rather than defaulting either way. For a head-to-head breakdown see Canada Post vs FedEx, and for a wider view see Canada Post Alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Canada Post Shipping

Does Canada Post deliver on weekends?

No. Canada Post delivers Monday to Friday, to residences from 9 am until as late as 8 pm and to businesses from 9 am until 5 pm, and makes no deliveries on statutory holidays. In its 2025 reporting Canada Post states plainly that it "cannot offer customers affordable weekend parcel delivery." If you need a Saturday delivery, UPS offers Saturday residential delivery in parts of Canada at no extra fee, and Purolator and FedEx will deliver Saturday for a charge. Compare your options before you ship, and see our Canada Post Delivery Times guide for standards by service and the statutory holiday schedule.

What is the heaviest parcel Canada Post will accept?

30 kg (66 lb) per parcel, with no single dimension over 2 m and length plus girth no more than 3 m. That ceiling is roughly half what UPS, Purolator and FedEx accept, all of which take up to 68 kg (150 lb). If you ship heavy items regularly, it is worth comparing carriers rather than defaulting to Canada Post.

How does Canada Post calculate dimensional weight?

Canada Post calls it the volumetric equivalent of actual weight and charges whichever is greater, actual or volumetric. The formula is cubic volume divided by a density factor, and the factor depends on the service: 5,000 (cubic cm) or 139 (cubic in) for Priority, Xpresspost, Expedited Parcel and all US and international services, and 6,000 (cubic cm) or 166 (cubic in) for Regular Parcel. A higher factor produces a lower result, so Regular Parcel is actually the more forgiving service on dimensions.

Which Canada Post services come with a delivery guarantee?

Priority, Xpresspost and Expedited Parcel carry the On-Time Delivery Guarantee. Regular Parcel does not. Canada Post states that except where the guarantee applies, all delivery standards are estimates only and are not guaranteed, so the difference between Expedited Parcel and Regular Parcel is not only speed, it is whether the delivery date is a commitment at all.

Is tracking included on Canada Post parcels?

Yes, on all four domestic services including Regular Parcel, the cheapest tier. Online tracking, delivery updates by email and text, and reference number tracking are all included at no additional charge. Shipments booked through Secureship can be tracked from one dashboard alongside your other carriers.

How much is the Canada Post fuel surcharge?

It changes every week, so no fixed percentage is printed here. Canada Post adjusts fuel surcharges weekly, applied on the Monday of each week, based on the average price of diesel as measured by Kalibrate Technologies. Domestic, US and international parcel, and packet services each carry a different rate. Check Canada Post's fuel surcharge page for the current week, or get a quote where applicable surcharges are already included in the price you see.

What is the difference between an oversized and an out-of-spec parcel?

They are two different penalties and the gap between them is large. A parcel is oversized if any dimension exceeds 1 m or it measures more than 76 cm along its second-longest side, which triggers an additional handling surcharge. A parcel is out of spec if it breaches the hard ceilings, any dimension over 2 m, length plus girth over 3 m, or weight over 30 kg, which triggers a much steeper out-of-spec surcharge. For US and international shipments an oversized parcel is accepted only if the destination permits it.

Who sets the duties and taxes on a Canada Post international parcel?

The destination country's customs authority, not Canada Post. Canada Post transmits your customs declaration but does not set the rate, which depends on destination, commodity and HS code. A customs form is required for every parcel leaving Canada, and Canada Post warns that false or incomplete information may cause foreign customs authorities to reject the package.

Will Canada Post deliver a parcel to my door?

Not always. More than 6.1 million Canadian addresses are served by community mailboxes rather than door delivery, which Canada Post says gives around 13.5 million Canadians 24/7 access to their mail and parcels, and nearly 22,000 lockers serve apartment and condominium buildings. For a shipper this matters: depending on the address and the parcel size, "delivered" may mean placed in a community mailbox or locker, left as a safe drop, or held at a post office for pickup.

Why would I choose Canada Post over a courier?

Reach. Canada Post serves more than 17.8 million addresses across urban, rural and remote Canada, which no private carrier matches, and more than half of its roughly 5,800 post offices are in rural areas. It also includes tracking on every domestic tier and prices distance into the base rate rather than adding separate residential or remote-area surcharges. The trade-offs are no weekend delivery, no guarantee on Regular Parcel, and the 30 kg ceiling. Compare on your actual route rather than assuming either way.
