What Is Loomis Express?

Loomis Express is a Canadian owned and operated courier, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario and part of TFI International since 2011. It delivers across Canada with a fleet of over 1,100 vehicles, working from facilities and hubs in every major city.

The Loomis brand dates back to 1905, when it made deliveries during the Alaskan Gold Rush, and went on to run armoured cars before becoming the ground and courier service it is today.

You do not need a Loomis account to ship with Loomis. Loomis lets you ship as a guest and pay by credit card, and platforms like Secureship negotiate group pricing normally reserved for high-volume shippers and pass it on to businesses of any size.

Loomis weight and size limits

Loomis Weight and Size Limits

Loomis applies the same per-piece limits to every service, and sets no cap on the total weight or number of pieces in a shipment. Here are the key per-package numbers.

68 kg
Max package weight (150 lb)
274 cm
Max length (108 in)
419 cm
Max length plus girth (165 in)

Each Loomis package can weigh up to 150 lb (68 kg), measure up to 108 in (274 cm) long, and 165 in (419 cm) in length plus girth. Packages over 70 lb or longer than 48 in carry a non-standard charge, and going over a per-package maximum is expensive: Loomis's OverMax fees start at $1,170 per piece within Canada. Our Loomis Surcharges guide covers them in full.

Dimensional Weight (Cubing)

Loomis charges whichever is greatest: declared, actual or cube weight. To calculate: convert your package dimensions to cubic feet (L × W × H ÷ 1,728 in inches), then multiply by the cube factor for your service:

Cube weight formula: L × W × H ÷ 1,728 × cube factor
Express (9:00, 12:00, 18:00) and international × 15
Ground, within Canada × 12.4
📦 Example: A 24″ × 18″ × 12″ box = 3 cubic feet. Via Express: 3 × 15 = 45 lbs cube weight. Via Ground: 3 × 12.4 = 37.2 lbs. If the box only weighs 10 lbs on the scale, you'd be billed at the higher cube weight. See our Loomis Shipping Rates guide for the full breakdown.

When you quote through Secureship, Loomis's cube weight rules are applied automatically for the service you pick, so the price you see already uses the billable weight.

Save on Loomis shipping

How to Save on Loomis Shipping

What you pay for Loomis depends on how you access it, how you pack, and which service you pick. Here are the levers that actually move the price.

💰
Use Group Buying Power
Secureship aggregates volume from thousands of businesses to negotiate group rates. Low-volume shippers get pricing they could not reach on their own, with no Loomis account required.
📦
Right-Size Your Packaging
Loomis bills on cube weight when a box is large for its weight, and Express and international services use a heavier cube factor than Ground, so empty space costs more on the faster services.
📋
Pay for a Guarantee Only When You Need One
Ground (1 to 6 business days) and Express 18:00 are Loomis's lower-cost options, but neither carries a money-back guarantee. If the time has to be a promise, Express 9:00 or 12:00 is worth the difference; if a range of days is fine, compare Ground on your route first.
🏠
Plan for Residential Deliveries
Loomis's 2026 rate guide adds a residential charge of $5.00 per shipment to a home address, including a home business. If nobody is in, Loomis tries again on the next business day at no charge, and charges $10.00 from the third attempt. A business address avoids the residential charge.
🔍
Compare Carriers on Every Shipment
Loomis is strong on guaranteed next-morning delivery and heavier parcels, but not on every shipment. For light parcels to homes, Canada Post lists no residential surcharge, and Purolator states it delivers to virtually every postal code in Canada. Compare here before you ship.

When to Choose Loomis Over Other Carriers

No single carrier wins every shipment. Loomis is strongest when a delivery has to arrive by a set time the next morning and on heavier parcels, and weakest on light, valuable parcels sent without a declared value and on addresses it does not serve. Here is where it is the right call, and where it is not.

✓ Choose Loomis When
  • A guaranteed next-morning delivery: Loomis Express 9:00 and 12:00 promise delivery by 9 am or noon the next possible business day between major cities, and on written request Loomis refunds or credits the transportation charges if a shipment is late
  • Heavier parcels: Loomis takes packages up to 68 kg (150 lb), more than double Canada Post's stated 30 kg limit
  • Receivers who might miss the first attempt: Loomis's rate guide includes a second delivery attempt on the next business day at no extra charge
  • Large multi-piece shipments: Loomis sets no limit on the total weight or number of pieces in a shipment, where Canpar caps a shipment at 50 pieces and 1,000 lb
↔ Consider Alternatives When
  • Light parcels with real value: without a declared value, Loomis covers $2.00 per lb up to $100, so a 5 lb parcel is covered for $10
  • PO box, rural route and fire route addresses: Loomis does not deliver to these, while Canada Post delivers to PO boxes and serves rural and remote addresses across Canada
  • You need a guarantee on the cheapest service: Loomis Ground and Express 18:00 are not covered by its money-back guarantee
  • You need a delivery window at home: Loomis publishes no delivery hours beyond each service's commitment, while Canada Post delivers to homes from 9 am until as late as 8 pm and Canpar states residential deliveries run as late as 7 pm

The sensible approach is to compare carriers on every shipment rather than defaulting to one. For head-to-head breakdowns, see Loomis vs Canada Post, Loomis vs Purolator and Loomis vs Canpar, and for a wider view see Loomis Alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Loomis Shipping

Where can I drop off a Loomis package?

At a Loomis Express drop-off location. Loomis's Find a Location tool has one search for packages that are already labelled and prepaid, including returns with a Collect or Prepaid label, and another if you do not have a Loomis account and want to ship. Print your label before you go.

What happens if I miss a Loomis delivery?

Loomis leaves a notice at the delivery address. Its 2026 rate guide states that Loomis automatically attempts to redeliver on the second business day at no additional charge, and charges $10.00 for a third attempt. The notice (Loomis calls it a door knocker) carries a number you can enter in Loomis's tracking tool to see where your package is.

Does Loomis deliver on weekends?

Not as standard: Loomis Ground ships Monday to Friday. Saturday delivery and pickup is a paid option to and from select cities and postal codes, at $28.00 per shipment in Loomis's 2026 rate guide. Loomis names Vancouver (Metropolitan), Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto (Metropolitan), Montreal and Halifax as Saturday centres. Call Loomis by 3:00 pm on Friday (1:00 pm for a rural destination), tick the Saturday Delivery box on the waybill, and put a Saturday Delivery sticker on every package. See our Loomis Delivery Times guide for more.

What time does Loomis deliver?

Loomis does not publish a delivery-hour window. What it publishes is a commitment for each service: Express 9:00 by 9 am and Express 12:00 by noon the next possible business day, both guaranteed between major cities, and Express 18:00 by the end of the next possible business day. Loomis Ground takes 1 to 6 business days. If a package has to arrive by a set time, Express 9:00 or 12:00 is the way to get one. When you create your Loomis shipment through Secureship, you can follow it from pickup to delivery in your Secureship dashboard, so you know when to expect it.

Does Loomis deliver to PO boxes?

No. Loomis Express does not deliver to PO boxes, rural routes or fire routes, and a shipment addressed to a PO box or rural route carries a $20.00 address correction charge in Loomis's 2026 rate guide. Use a street address, or compare carriers that serve your destination.

How heavy can a Loomis package be?

Up to 150 lb (68 kg) per package, with a maximum length of 108 in (274 cm) and 165 in (419 cm) in length plus girth. Loomis sets no limit on the total weight or number of pieces in a multi-piece shipment. Packages over 70 lb or longer than 48 in already carry a non-standard charge, and packages over the limits carry much larger fees, explained in our Loomis Surcharges & Fees guide.

Does Loomis guarantee its delivery times?

On some services. Loomis refunds or credits the transportation charges when a Loomis Express 9:00, 12:00 or 10:30 shipment arrives after its guaranteed time. Loomis Ground and Express 18:00 are not covered. You have to tell Loomis in writing within 15 calendar days, each package must weigh 75 lb or less, and the guarantee excludes manual waybills, PO box addresses, shipments worth over $5,000, and anything picked up or due between December 12 and January 5. Loomis also states the guarantee can be suspended, modified or revoked at its discretion. The full conditions are in Loomis's Terms and Conditions.

Who owns Loomis Express, and is it part of DHL?

Loomis Express is owned by TFI International, which, as Loomis states, bought it in 2011. It is not part of DHL, but it used to be DHL's domestic business: DHL Group's 2011 interim report states that DHL Express Canada sold its domestic Canadian express business to TransForce (now TFI International) at the end of June 2011, that the domestic business would be handled by Loomis Express, and that DHL Express Canada would continue to provide international express services.

What is Loomis CollectShip?

CollectShip is Loomis's way for someone to send a shipment back to a Loomis account holder. The sender logs in with the account number or PIN the account holder gives them, and the delivery address fills in automatically with the account holder's address. Loomis clients can also request an authorization key for third-party shipments. Details are on Loomis's CollectShip page, and our Loomis Services guide covers the rest of the line-up.

How do I contact Loomis customer service?

Loomis customer service is at 1-855-256-6647 (1-855-2LOOMIS), Monday to Friday 7 am to 8 pm Eastern (Quebec 8 am to 5 pm Eastern), or 1-905-460-2530 from outside Canada. Live chat on loomisexpress.com runs Monday to Friday 10 am to 7 pm Eastern, and technical support for Loomis's shipping systems is at 1-877-549-3638. All of these are on Loomis's contact page.
