Key Points

A small parcel bound for Mexico City (MEX) from Toronto (YYZ) could cost over $700 CAD if you select FedEx’s International Priority Service. That is a premium rapid service, so delaying the parcel’s arrival and having the broker Secureship find reduced rates can make shipping far more affordable. Yet, other services may add to your shipping costs – the type of container shipped and shipping in the Christmas high season. But as this blog describes, there are ways to avoid or lower those costs because in today’s economic environment, who can afford to pay more than necessary?
Table of Contents
The table below outlines what it may cost to ship a relatively small six-kilogram parcel from Toronto (YYZ) to Mexico City (MEX).
The data were gathered from Secureship’s estimator, and you will immediately notice what Secureship can do for your shipping costs.
| Service | Estimated Delivery Time | Courier’s Rate | Secureship’s Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx International First | 2 business days | $735 CAD | Not available |
| FedEx International Priority | 2 business days (evening) | $542 CAD | $190 CAD |
| FedEx International Economy | 4 business days | $489 CAD | $166 CAD |
| UPS Express | 2 business days | $561 CAD | $253 CAD |
| UPS Saver | 2 business days (evening) | $545 CAD | $245 CAD |
| UPS Expedited | 3 business days | $502 CAD | $226 CAD |
Also clearly noticeable is the effect on price by extending a parcel’s delivery time.
The prices quoted above were between two large major centres. However, parcel pick ups and deliveries from and to smaller, more remote locations may incur extra costs, which is called an extended area service fee.
There are two other fees that can affect shipping costs.
Incorporated into a courier’s rate is the fuel surcharge, which varies based on current oil prices. And so, you may notice over time the rate you pay for the same shipping service has inexplicably gone up or down.
When a parcel exceeds a certain weight or size, couriers apply a surcharge.
If a parcel’s length plus girth (2x width + 2x height) is greater than 330 cm, a large package charge is added, which in 2025, UPS added $112.05 CAD to each commercial shipment.
How you package the goods and the season they are shipped may also increase your shipping costs.
An additional handling charge applies if goods are packaged in a metal, wood, or plastic container, essentially anything that is not a cardboard box.
A two-month time period encompassing Christmas (early November till the new year) is when shipping volumes increase dramatically, and so do their rates.
So, shipping before or after high season is the best way to mitigate these costs.
This blog has shown how expensive a shipment from Canada to Mexico could be, particularly if it is a priority shipment. However, allowing a few extra days for a package to arrive typically knocks off a notable amount from the cost. As well, asking Secureship for help also substantially reduces your shipping costs – at least 50% and often more. Savings can also be had by using a cardboard box when shipping (plastic, wood, metal containers will incur a handling fee). And by avoiding shipping’s high season (early November to the new year), you won’t have to pay a premium for the extra volumes at that time of year.
