Key Points

The cheapest way to ship a package to Germany, or anywhere, is to send it by sea freight, and by making the box as small as possible. A sea voyage may result in a delivery time of a month or more, so many opt for air shipments. And when carriers - UPS, FedEx, Purolator - calculate a parcel’s shipping cost, its dimensions and delivery time both affect the rate - bigger boxes and faster deliveries incur higher fees. But for Canadian residents, Secureship finds great savings - typically more than 50% - with noted carriers and passes them on to its clients. And the added bonus is the time savings to you or your business when you let Secureship work for you.
Table of Contents
We understand that a heavier parcel requires more fuel to transport and should cost us more to ship it.
But carriers also use the overall size of a parcel to determine its dimensional weight-billable weight. Which the diagram below demonstrates.
Once the dimensional weight is calculated, that number is compared to the parcel’s actual weight. And whichever number is bigger, that is used for the rate.
So, that means two parcels of the same weight - say feathers and gold - will incur different shipping rates; and in this case the feathers would be more expensive to ship.
Like a heavier shipment, it makes sense that an overnight shipment from Canada to Germany would be more expensive than for one that takes a week.
And the table below makes that abundantly clear for a five kilogram parcel shipped between Montreal and Munich.
Looking closely at the table above, you no doubt noticed that of the two Canada Post prices, the bold one was substantially less.
And that’s all due to Secureship’s bulk buying agreement with Canada Post, which reduced the rate by almost 40%; but Secureship can also find deals for you with UPS and FedEx as you can see below, they are mostly more than 50%.
Shipping by surface transport is the cheapest way to ship goods from Canada to Germany, but this blog outlined other ways to reduce your shipping costs. They include making the parcel as small as is reasonable, increase the delivery time, and having Secureship, Canada’s premier shipping broker, find much cheaper options on your behalf. And the savings go beyond money, you will also save a lot of time.
