Purolator pricing

Understanding Purolator Pricing

Purolator charges whichever is greater — actual weight or dimensional weight. This is the single biggest factor that catches shippers off guard. A large, lightweight box can cost far more than expected because of how much truck space it occupies.

Dimensional Weight (Cubing)

Purolator charges whichever is greater: actual weight or cubic (dimensional) weight. Convert your package to cubic feet (L × W × H ÷ 1,728 in inches), then multiply by the cube factor:

Dimensional weight formula: L × W × H ÷ 1,728 × cube factor
Express (air network) × 15 lb per cubic foot
Ground (non-air) × 12.4 lb per cubic foot
📦 Example: A 24″ × 18″ × 12″ box = 3 cubic feet. Via Express (air): 3 × 15 = 45 lbs. Via Ground: 3 × 12.4 = 37.2 lbs. If the box only weighs 5 lbs on the scale, you'd be billed at the higher cubic weight. Every inch you trim from your packaging directly reduces cost.

Secureship's calculator handles this automatically — enter both your actual weight and dimensions and it shows the billable weight instantly.

Fuel Surcharge — The Largest Add-On

The fuel surcharge is the most significant fee on every Purolator shipment. As of February 2, 2026, the courier fuel surcharge is 23.5% of the base transportation rate. On a $30 base rate, that's an extra $7.05 — before any other fees.

23.5% courier fuel surcharge
Monthly courier reset (1st Monday)
Weekly freight reset

The courier surcharge is set monthly based on the 4-week average gasoline price reported by Natural Resources Canada, taking effect on the first Monday of each month. The freight fuel surcharge is set weekly based on diesel prices. Because fuel prices fluctuate, these surcharges move independently of Purolator's annual rate adjustment.

Peak Season Surcharges

During the holiday shipping rush, Purolator applies additional peak surcharges on top of standard fees. For 2025–2026, peak surcharges were in effect from October 27, 2025 – January 18, 2026:

  • Additional Handling: CAD $6.00/piece
  • Oversized (>50 lbs, ≤150 lbs or longest side >48" ≤108"): CAD $6.00/piece
  • Residential Heavyweight (>70 lbs, ≤150 lbs, residential): CAD $6.00/piece

Peak surcharges stack on top of standard fees. A heavy residential package during the holiday season can see base rate + fuel + oversize + residential + peak — potentially adding $40+ on top of the base rate. Timing shipments before peak starts (typically late October) saves meaningfully.

Purolator rate changes

Purolator Annual Rate Adjustment

5.7% average increase
September 1, 2025 effective date

Purolator adjusts base transportation rates annually on September 1. Fuel surcharges — calculated as a percentage of the base rate — compound on top, so your total effective increase is slightly more than the published number. The current adjustment (effective September 1, 2025) averages 5.7% across all services.

How Secureship Helps Offset Rate Increases

When Purolator raises base rates, the discount percentage Secureship users receive is applied to the new higher base — so your absolute dollar savings increase proportionally. You don't need to renegotiate your rates every September. Secureship's group-negotiated rates adjust automatically, with no sunset clause and no minimum volume requirement.

Save on Purolator

How to Save on Purolator Shipping Rates

There's a real range between what you pay as a retail walk-in and what you pay with the right strategy. These six approaches are grounded in how Purolator's pricing actually works.

📊
1. Compare Carriers — Purolator Isn't Always the Cheapest
For lightweight packages under 5 lbs to residential addresses, Canada Post often wins. For certain U.S. routes, FedEx or UPS may offer better value. For regional routes, GLS or Canpar may undercut Purolator. Compare rates for your specific shipment on Secureship.
📦
2. Optimize Packaging — Avoid Dimensional Weight Penalties
Dimensional weight can multiply your effective weight by 8× or more. Right-size your packaging: use boxes that closely match your product. Every unnecessary centimetre of box space costs money through the dimensional weight formula.
🏢
3. Ship to Commercial Addresses
Purolator's residential delivery surcharge is $4.65 per shipment. For 100 packages/month, that's $465 in surcharges alone. Ship to commercial addresses when possible, or use Purolator access points — it eliminates the residential surcharge and gives recipients pickup flexibility.
📐
4. Avoid Additional Handling Fees
Use standard cardboard boxes whenever possible. Luggage, crates, metal containers, and irregularly shaped packaging trigger additional handling surcharges. Keeping packages under 50 lbs (23 kg) avoids the $27.60/piece oversize fee.
🔑
5. Bring Your Own Account
Already have a Purolator account with negotiated rates? Add your account number to Secureship to see your Purolator rates alongside other carriers. Compare apples-to-apples and make sure you're choosing the best option for every shipment.
🚀
6. Use a Multi-Carrier Platform Like Secureship
Secureship aggregates shipping volume across thousands of businesses and negotiates rates individual small businesses can't get on their own. Even low-volume shippers (5–10 packages/month) access rates that would normally require hundreds of packages per week. No sunset clause, no minimum volume.

Frequently Asked Questions about Purolator Rates

Does Purolator charge by weight or size?

Purolator uses cubing (dimensional weight) pricing. They convert your package to cubic feet (L × W × H ÷ 1,728 in inches) and multiply by a cube factor: ×15 for Express (air) or ×12.4 for Ground. For example: a 24″ × 18″ × 12″ box = 3 cu ft → 45 lbs via Express (3 × 15) or 37 lbs via Ground (3 × 12.4). If the actual weight is only 10 lbs, you'd be charged the higher cubic weight. Always enter exact dimensions in Secureship's calculator for accurate pricing.

How can I get a discount on Purolator shipping?

Two main options: 1) Open a Purolator business account — new accounts get up to 65% off published Express rates for the first 12 months. Ongoing discounts require high shipping volumes. 2) Use a third-party platform like Secureship, which leverages collective buying power to offer discounted rates to all users — even low-volume shippers can save significantly versus retail pricing.

How much is the Purolator fuel surcharge?

Purolator's courier fuel surcharge is set monthly, based on the 4-week average gasoline price from Natural Resources Canada, taking effect the first Monday of each month. As of February 2026, it is 23.5%. Freight fuel surcharges are set weekly based on diesel prices from the Freight Carriers Association of Canada.

How much did Purolator rates increase in 2025-2026?

Purolator's 2025–2026 rate adjustment, effective September 1, 2025, represents an average increase of approximately 5.7% across all services. This applies to base transportation rates; fuel surcharges fluctuate independently based on fuel prices. Using a platform like Secureship helps offset annual rate increases through group discount pricing.

What is the cheapest Purolator service?

Purolator Ground is the most affordable service, with delivery in 1–3 business days within the same province and 2–7 business days cross-province. For even lower rates, compare Purolator Ground against other carriers' economy services using Secureship's rate comparison tool.

Do I need a Purolator account to ship?

No. You can ship through a third-party platform like Secureship, which provides access to Purolator services at discounted rates. All you need is a free Secureship account — no Purolator contract or minimum volume required. However, if you ship very high volumes ($100,000+/year), a direct Purolator account with negotiated rates may also be worthwhile.
