How DHL Pricing Works

Every DHL Express quote comes down to one formula: base rate + optional services + surcharges = total price. The base rate is driven by three things:

  • Chargeable weight: the greater of actual or volumetric weight (see below).
  • Destination zone: DHL sorts every country into a rating zone from 1 to 14.
  • Speed: DHL Express Worldwide (end of next business day) versus a timed service (before 09:00, 10:30, or noon).

Optional services (such as signature or shipment value protection) and surcharges (fuel, remote area, oversize, and others) are added on top. The result is your all-in price.

DHL shipping zones

DHL Shipping Zones

The destination zone is one of the biggest drivers of your base rate. Zone 1 is the closest and least expensive from Canada, with cost rising toward Zone 14. Here is where some common destinations fall:

ZoneExample destinations
Zone 1United States
Zone 2Mexico
Zone 3United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands
Zone 6China
Zone 7India
Zone 8Japan, South Korea, Singapore
Zone 9United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia
Zone 11Australia, New Zealand
Zone 12Brazil, Argentina

Transit time and whether the timed services (09:00, 10:30, 12:00) are available depend on the exact origin and destination. Check your lane with DHL's Capability Tool, or see live pricing for your route in Secureship's calculator.

DHL dimensional weight

Dimensional (Volumetric) Weight

DHL charges whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight. This is the factor that most often surprises shippers, a large but light box can cost far more than the scale suggests, because of the space it takes on the aircraft.

Dimensional Weight (Cubing)

DHL charges whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight, using the standard IATA method. To calculate volumetric weight, multiply length × width × height for each piece, then divide by the factor for your unit of measurement:

DHL volumetric weight formula: L × W × H ÷ 5,000 (cm) or ÷ 139 (in)
Measured in centimetres ÷ 5,000
Measured in inches ÷ 139
📦 Example: A 40 × 30 × 30 cm box = 36,000 cm³. Volumetric weight = 36,000 ÷ 5,000 = 7.2 kg. If the box weighs only 4 kg on the scale, you are billed at the higher 7.2 kg volumetric weight. Every centimetre you trim reduces the billable weight.

Secureship's calculator applies this automatically: enter your actual weight and dimensions and it shows the billable weight instantly.

DHL surcharges

Surcharges and the Fuel Surcharge

The base rate is only part of what you pay. DHL adds surcharges where a shipment needs extra handling or where costs move, the most common being the fuel surcharge, plus remote-area, oversize, overweight, and address-correction fees. Our DHL Surcharges & Fees guide breaks down every charge with current amounts.

The Fuel Surcharge

The fuel surcharge is the add-on that appears on nearly every shipment. DHL applies it as a percentage of the transportation and additional charges, set by an index based on U.S. Gulf Coast jet-fuel prices reported by the U.S. Department of Energy. The percentage is adjusted regularly, so rather than print a figure that goes stale, check the current rate on DHL Express Canada's surcharge page. When you quote through Secureship, the applicable surcharge is already built into the rate you see.

DHL annual price change

DHL's Annual Price Change

Jan 1 annual price increase (GPI)
CAD rates billed in

DHL publishes rates in Canadian dollars that are valid until December 31, then applies a General Price Increase (GPI) on January 1 each year. Fuel and other surcharges move independently of this annual adjustment, so your total can change during the year even though the base rates do not.

Comparing carriers on every shipment is the simplest way to absorb annual increases: Secureship's group-negotiated rates apply automatically, with no minimum volume and no yearly renegotiation. Compare your route to see the current price.

Save on DHL rates

How to Save on DHL Shipping Rates

There is a real gap between what you pay at list price and what you pay with the right approach. These tips are grounded in how DHL's pricing actually works.

📊
1. Compare Carriers on Every Shipment
DHL is strong on international routes, but not every one. Compare your exact shipment against other carriers on Secureship and pick the best rate each time.
📦
2. Right-Size Your Packaging
Because DHL bills the greater of actual or volumetric weight, every unnecessary centimetre of box space adds cost through the volumetric weight formula. Use the smallest box that protects your item.
🌍
3. Match the Service to the Deadline
DHL Express Worldwide (end of next business day) costs less than the timed 09:00 and 10:30 services. Only pay for a guaranteed morning arrival when you truly need it.
🧾
4. Get Customs Paperwork Right
For international shipments, a complete commercial invoice and an electronically produced label avoid Address Correction and Data Entry surcharges, and prevent clearance delays.
🔑
5. Use Group Rates (No Account Needed)
Secureship aggregates volume across thousands of businesses to negotiate rates a single small shipper cannot get alone. No DHL account, no minimum volume, no sunset clause.

Frequently Asked Questions About DHL Rates

How much does DHL international shipping cost?

There is no single price. A DHL Express rate is built from a base rate (set by weight, destination zone, and service speed) plus any optional services and surcharges such as fuel. The fastest way to see your real cost is to enter your shipment in Secureship's calculator, which shows live DHL rates next to every other major carrier.

How does DHL calculate shipping rates?

DHL prices each shipment as base rate + optional services + surcharges. The base rate depends on the chargeable weight, the destination zone (1 to 14), and how fast you need it (Express Worldwide or a timed service). Chargeable weight is the greater of actual or volumetric weight.

What is a DHL shipping zone?

DHL groups every destination into a rating zone from 1 to 14, and the zone sets the base rate for a given weight. From Canada, the United States is Zone 1, Mexico is Zone 2, and most of Western Europe is Zone 3, with more distant regions in higher zones. Your quote applies the zone automatically.

Does DHL charge by size or weight?

Both. DHL bills the greater of actual or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height ÷ 5,000 (cm) or ÷ 139 (in) per piece, so a large but light box can cost more than the scale suggests. Right-sizing your packaging keeps the billable weight down.

How much is the DHL fuel surcharge?

DHL adds a fuel surcharge as a percentage of the transportation charges, set by an index tied to U.S. Gulf Coast jet-fuel prices and adjusted regularly. Because the rate changes, we do not print a fixed figure here. Check the current percentage on DHL Express Canada's surcharge page, or quote through Secureship, where it is built into the rate you see.

Do DHL rates change every year?

Yes. DHL publishes rates in Canadian dollars that are valid until December 31, and applies a General Price Increase (GPI) on January 1 each year. Fuel and other surcharges move separately from the annual adjustment. Comparing carriers each year through Secureship helps offset increases.

How can I get cheaper DHL rates?

Use a multi-carrier platform like Secureship, which negotiates group rates across thousands of businesses and passes the discount on, with no DHL account or minimum volume required. Right-sizing packaging to cut volumetric weight, and choosing Express Worldwide over a timed service when you do not need a set delivery time, also lower the cost.
