FedEx surcharges and fees list

FedEx Surcharges and Fees List

FedEx's base rate is rarely the final price. The last step of FedEx's own pricing method is to "add special handling fees, surcharges and other additional charges", and more than one can apply to the same shipment. FedEx Express charges most of them per shipment within Canada (per package on international shipments), while FedEx Ground charges them per package, so a five-box Ground shipment can pay the same fee five times.

Most fees rose about 3 to 5% on 5 January 2026, and FedEx tells shippers with an agreement to check it for the net effect, since a negotiated price may not move with the list. Government duties, taxes and FedEx's clearance fees follow customs rules rather than the rate guide, so they live on our FedEx Customs & Duties guide. FedEx's charges fall into six groups:

  • Fuel and peak-season surcharges, set by FedEx and changed on its own schedule.
  • Size, weight and packaging, triggered by the package itself.
  • Delivery location, triggered by a residential or remote destination.
  • Saturday, pickup and signature options, which you choose to add.
  • Address, billing and paperwork, triggered by how a shipment was addressed, billed or documented.
  • Specialist handling, for dangerous goods, dry ice and monitored shipments.

FedEx fuel surcharge

The FedEx Fuel Surcharge

2 indexes diesel, jet fuel
Rate + pickup charged on
Varies set by FedEx

The fuel surcharge is a percentage FedEx adds to the package rate. FedEx Express adjusts it two ways. Within Canada, it follows a rounded average of the Canada retail diesel price per litre published by Natural Resources Canada. On international shipments, it follows a rounded average of the U.S. Gulf Coast spot price for kerosene-type jet fuel. Either way it is charged on the net package rate plus any pickup fee, so a pickup you pay for also carries fuel on top.

Check the current percentage on FedEx's fuel surcharge page, which also carries FedEx's notes on changes to the Express and Ground fuel surcharges. When you quote through Secureship, the applicable surcharge is already inside the rate you see, so you are comparing all-in prices rather than base rates.

FedEx demand surcharges

Peak Season Demand Surcharges

FedEx adds demand surcharges on top of base rates and the fuel surcharge "during times of elevated volumes, high demand for capacity, and increased operating costs across our network," each with its own start and end dates, so check FedEx's current demand surcharges before budgeting a busy-season shipment.

  • Non-standard packages, everyone: from 28 September 2026 to 17 January 2027, oversize, additional handling and unauthorized packages within Canada pay a demand add-on on top of the regular fee, on FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. FedEx's reason is that such items "require additional labor and equipment to sort, handle, and deliver safely." On Ground the add-on appears as a separate line on the invoice.
  • International, everyone: from 21 September 2026 to 7 February 2027 the same add-ons apply to FedEx Express international packages, and every Express international shipment also carries a per-pound demand surcharge that varies by lane, with a minimum per package.
  • Residential, very large shippers only: from 26 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, a residential demand charge applies to enterprise customers averaging more than 7,000 packages a week. A typical small business will not see it. FedEx has applied a peak-season residential demand charge to very large shippers every year since 2021.

FedEx size thresholds

Additional Handling, Oversize and Unauthorized Package Charges

FedEx has three size charges, and each one costs several times more than the one before. Measured on the longest side alone, they start at:

  • Additional handling: 48 in
  • Oversize: 96 in
  • Unauthorized: 108 in. Past this point, FedEx may refuse, return or dispose of the package, so don't send it at all.

Length plus girth, cubic volume and weight can trigger them too, and some packaging triggers additional handling. The full list is in the size, weight and packaging table. Two things changed in 2026:

  • Since 12 January, FedEx Ground uses the same cubic volume and 110 lb triggers as Express for additional handling and oversize.
  • Since 19 January, the unauthorized charge on Express within Canada is lower.

The charge isn't the whole cost, though. Oversize and dimension-triggered packages also carry a minimum billable weight, explained in our FedEx Shipping Rates guide.

FedEx residential and remote surcharges

Residential and Remote Delivery Surcharges

FedEx charges for where a package goes, not just what it is:

  • Residential delivery: applies to any home, including a home where someone runs a business.
  • Remote areas on FedEx Express: an Out-of-Delivery or Pickup Area surcharge per shipment, in tiers with a per-pound minimum. The highest tier within Canada, Tier C, covers the territories and postal codes starting A0K, A0P, A0R, A2V, G0G, G4T, J0M, R0B, T0P, T0V, V0L, V0T, V0V and V0W.
  • Remote areas on FedEx Ground: a Remote Rural Surcharge in fixed tiers per package, plus an extra charge on packages over 100 lb.
  • U.S. destinations: a Delivery Area Surcharge for select ZIP codes in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Because Express charges per shipment and Ground per package, neither is always cheaper for remote delivery. If you ship to remote postal codes often, compare carriers on each shipment before you book.

FedEx Saturday, pickup and signature options

Saturday, Pickup and Signature Options

Unlike the other charges on this page, these are options you choose to add, each with its own price:

  • Saturday delivery: only on Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day, International Priority and International Priority Express. Our FedEx Delivery Times guide shows how Saturday fits into transit times.
  • Saturday pickup and drop-off: charged separately.
  • Regularly scheduled pickup: a weekly fee. Schedule at least one pickup in a week and you pay the full weekly fee for the days you chose.
  • Direct Signature: added free on FedEx Express for shipments within Canada declared at $500 or more, and for U.S. packages declared at US$500 or more.
  • Declared value: not insurance. FedEx states it does not provide insurance of any kind.
  • Authenticated Delivery: for high-value shipments, releases the package only to a recipient holding a unique QR code.

Recipients can skip the signature by signing FedEx's Signature Release Authorization and Indemnification Agreement for Recipients, available through a local FedEx location or account executive (online through Delivery Manager only for shipments to the U.S.). A signature option chosen by the sender overrides the release. The terms are in the FedEx Service Guide.

FedEx address correction and billing fees

Address Correction and Billing Fees

These fees come from how a shipment was addressed or billed, not from the package itself, so most of them are avoidable:

  • Address correction: charged when FedEx has to find the right address to deliver, when you reroute a shipment to another address in the same city, or when you change a hold-at-location instruction. Any other address change counts as a new shipment, with new shipping charges.
  • Missing billing details: charged when a shipment has no valid account or credit card number for the billing option chosen.
  • Billing changes: charged for every request to change who is billed after the shipment is sent.
  • Third-party billing: a surcharge that the third party pays when a shipment is billed to them.

The definitions are in the FedEx Express rate guide.

How Secureship helps with FedEx surcharges

How Secureship Helps You Manage Surcharges

You cannot avoid every surcharge, but you can keep them from quietly inflating what you pay. Two things make the biggest difference: the base rate that percentage-based fees are calculated from, and whether you are tied to a single carrier's fee schedule. Secureship helps with both.

⛽
Group rates shrink the fuel surcharge too
The FedEx fuel surcharge is a percentage of your rate plus any pickup fee, not a flat fee, so a lower rate means a lower fuel charge on top of it. Secureship's group-negotiated rates lower that rate, so you save twice: once on the rate itself, and again on the fuel surcharge calculated from it.
🔄
You are not locked into one carrier's fee schedule
These surcharges are FedEx's own, and other carriers set theirs differently. Secureship lets you ship with any major carrier from one place, with no accounts, contracts, or minimum volume required.

Frequently Asked Questions About FedEx Surcharges

What is the FedEx fuel surcharge today?

FedEx publishes the current percentage on its fuel surcharge page, and that is the only figure to rely on: FedEx sets the amount and how long it applies at its sole discretion, and may apply it without notice. Within Canada it follows Canadian retail diesel prices, and on international shipments the price of jet fuel. Secureship quotes already include it.

How much is the FedEx residential surcharge in Canada?

$4.80, charged per shipment on FedEx Express and per package on FedEx Ground, as of January 2026. It applies to deliveries to a home, and FedEx counts a home where a business is operated as a residence too.

Does FedEx charge extra for remote areas in Canada?

Yes, and the amounts differ by network. FedEx Express charges an out-of-delivery-area surcharge per shipment: the greater of $27.95 or $0.56/lb in most areas outside its primary service areas, and the greater of $124.40 or $4.20/lb in the territories and select postal codes in NL, QC, MB, AB and BC. FedEx Ground charges a Remote Rural Surcharge per package of $7.05, $17.80 or $150, depending on the postal code. Compare carriers before shipping to a remote postal code.

What is the FedEx address correction fee?

$17.60, per shipment on FedEx Express and per package on FedEx Ground. FedEx charges it when it has to find the correct address, reroute a package within the same city, or change a hold-at-location instruction. A change that is not a correction or reroute is treated as a new shipment.

Can I get a FedEx package delivered without signing?

Often, yes. A recipient can authorize release without a signature by signing FedEx's Signature Release Authorization and Indemnification Agreement for Recipients, available through a local FedEx location or account executive, or online through Delivery Manager for shipments to the U.S. If the sender chose a signature option, that overrides the release.
