Why consider Canpar alternatives

Why Consider Canpar Alternatives?

Canpar is a genuinely solid carrier: a Canadian ground network with over 60 terminals, packages up to 68 kg (150 lb), guaranteed Select and Express services, and timed and Saturday upgrades at published prices. If you ship heavier parcels between businesses, Canpar is worth taking seriously.

But a few situations work against it. Canpar makes one delivery attempt at a home address, then the package waits at a SMARTSpot for pickup. It does not deliver to PO boxes or rural route addresses, its rate calculator caps U.S. pieces at 70 lb, and it publishes no country list or transit times for international shipments. The fees are in our Canpar Surcharges guide. The goal here is not to talk you out of Canpar, it is to show you when an alternative genuinely makes sense, and when it does not.

Canpar's Main Alternatives Compared

The four realistic alternatives for a parcel within Canada are Canada Post, Purolator, UPS and FedEx. Every figure below is read from that carrier's own published material.

Read the table in both directions. Canpar matches Purolator, UPS and FedEx on weight, and takes more than twice what Canada Post does. It does not win the residential row: its $4.80 equals FedEx Express, sits just under UPS, and is slightly above the $4.65 in Purolator's rate guide, while Canada Post lists no residential surcharge at all. On Saturday, FedEx Ground stands out, delivering eligible homes with no pricing change, per FedEx's announcement.

When to use each Canpar alternative

When to Use Each Alternative

The table tells you what differs. This is which carrier to reach for, case by case.

📍
Light parcels to homes: Canada Post
Canada Post caps parcels at 30 kg and delivers Monday to Friday only, but its fee schedules list no residential surcharge: it prices distance and remoteness into the base rate instead. Canpar charges a residential surcharge on every home delivery, and does not deliver to PO boxes or rural route addresses at all. See Canpar vs Canada Post.
⏰
A morning deadline or timed Ground: Purolator
Canpar's timed options are 10AM and Noon add-ons. Purolator publishes Express 9AM, 10:30AM and 12PM, and guaranteed timed Ground tiers (Ground 9AM, 10:30AM and Evening) for shipments prepared on an automated shipping system. See Canpar vs Purolator.
🗺️
Remote postal codes: check Purolator
Canpar adds an Extended Area Surcharge for remote points and those served by an authorized agent, and may hand remote deliveries to other carriers. Purolator states it delivers to virtually every postal code in Canada. Price the exact postal code before you book.
📅
Saturday home delivery: FedEx Ground or UPS
Canpar's Saturday delivery is a paid upgrade for select destinations. FedEx states eligible FedEx Ground home deliveries can arrive on Saturday with no pricing change, and UPS offers Saturday delivery from some origins to select destinations. Canada Post does not deliver parcels on weekends.
🇺🇸
Timed delivery to the U.S.: Purolator
Canpar publishes U.S. Ground to the continental U.S. and Select USA from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver only. Purolator publishes Express U.S. 9AM, 10:30AM and 12PM, Express U.S. and Ground U.S. Our Canpar Services guide covers Canpar's U.S. options.

For a direct head to head rather than a survey, Canada Post and Purolator each have their own comparison page, linked in the cards above.

Where Canpar still wins

Where Canpar Still Wins

It is worth restating what makes Canpar the right call in the first place. Five things it does well:

  • More than twice Canada Post's weight limit. Canpar takes packages up to 68 kg (150 lb) within Canada, against Canada Post's 30 kg.
  • A $100 liability floor. Without a declared value, Canpar covers the greater of $100 or $2.00 per pound per shipment. Purolator covers $2.00 per pound, so an undeclared 5 lb parcel is covered up to $100 with Canpar and $10 with Purolator.
  • A full refund when it is late. On a late Select, Express or timed shipment within Canada, Canpar refunds or credits the transportation charges, for packages up to 75 lb. Since March 2026, Purolator refunds half of the service rate, and only when no piece is over 70 lb.
  • Two delivery attempts for businesses. Canpar makes up to two attempts at a commercial address.
  • Timed and Saturday upgrades at published prices, listed in our Canpar Surcharges guide.

The guarantee and liability terms are in Canpar's Terms of Service, and the full lineup is in our Canpar Services guide. The practical conclusion is not to pick a carrier, it is to stop picking one. Canpar is often right for heavy business parcels, and worth checking against the alternatives for home deliveries, morning deadlines and remote postal codes, so compare on every shipment rather than switching.

Frequently Asked Questions About Canpar Alternatives

Who are Canpar's main competitors?

For parcels within Canada and to the U.S., the main alternatives are Canada Post, Purolator, UPS and FedEx. Each wins in different places: Canada Post on light parcels to homes, with no residential surcharge listed, Purolator on timed deliveries, and UPS and FedEx on Saturday home delivery in some areas. Compare them on your route before you book.

Is Canpar cheaper than Purolator?

It depends on the shipment. On several published fees Purolator is slightly cheaper: its residential surcharge is $4.65 per shipment against Canpar's $4.80, per Purolator's rate guide effective 1 September 2025. Canpar includes more liability on light parcels, though, with a $100 floor. The base rate for your exact lane decides it, so compare live rates. Our Canpar vs Purolator guide has the full comparison.

Which carrier takes the heaviest parcels?

Canpar, Purolator, UPS and FedEx all cap a package at 68 kg (150 lb), and Canada Post at 30 kg. Two exceptions: FedEx Ground drops to 70 lb in Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories, and Canpar's rate calculator caps U.S. pieces at 70 lb.

Which Canpar alternative delivers on Saturday?

Several, on different terms. FedEx states eligible FedEx Ground home deliveries can arrive on Saturday with no pricing change, UPS offers Saturday delivery from some origins to select destinations, and Purolator and FedEx Express charge for it. Canpar's own Saturday delivery is a paid upgrade for select destinations, and Canada Post does not deliver parcels on weekends. See our Canpar Delivery Times guide.
