Why consider Loomis alternatives

Why Consider Loomis Alternatives?

Loomis is a genuinely solid carrier: a Canadian network with a fleet of over 1,100 vehicles, packages up to 68 kg (150 lb), guaranteed 9:00 and 12:00 next-day delivery between major cities, and named services to the U.S. and over 220 countries. If you ship time-sensitive parcels between businesses, Loomis is worth taking seriously.

But a few situations work against it. Without a declared value, Loomis covers only $2.00 per pound, up to $100, so light parcels are barely covered. It does not deliver to PO boxes, rural routes or fire routes, Loomis Ground and Express 18:00 carry no guarantee, and it publishes no delivery-hour window for home deliveries. The fees are in our Loomis Surcharges guide. The goal here is not to talk you out of Loomis, it is to show you when an alternative genuinely makes sense, and when it does not.

Loomis alternatives compared

Loomis's Main Alternatives Compared

The four realistic alternatives for a parcel within Canada are Canpar, Canada Post, Purolator and UPS. Every figure below is read from that carrier's own published material.

Residential surcharge$5.00 per shipment$4.80 per shipmentNone listed; geography is priced into the base rate$4.65 per shipment (rate guide effective 1 Sep 2025)$5.05 per delivery

Read the table in both directions. Loomis matches Canpar, Purolator and UPS on weight, and takes more than twice what Canada Post does. It does not win the residential row: its $5.00 sits just under UPS, but above Canpar's $4.80 and the $4.65 in Purolator's rate guide, while Canada Post lists no residential surcharge at all. On Saturday, Loomis offers both delivery and pickup, but only to and from select cities; Purolator's Saturday Service also covers pickup within Canada. Canpar's residential and liability terms are in its Terms of Service.

When to use each Loomis alternative

When to Use Each Alternative

The table tells you what differs. This is which carrier to reach for, case by case.

🛡️
Light parcels with real value: Canpar
Without a declared value, Loomis covers $2.00 per pound up to $100, so a 5 lb parcel is covered for $10. Canpar, its TFI International sister company, covers the greater of $100 or $2.00 per pound, so the same parcel is covered for $100. See Loomis vs Canpar.
📍
Light parcels to homes and PO boxes: Canada Post
Canada Post caps parcels at 30 kg and delivers Monday to Friday only, but its fee schedules list no residential surcharge, and it accepts parcels addressed to a PO box. Loomis charges a residential surcharge on every home delivery and does not deliver to PO boxes, rural routes or fire routes. See Loomis vs Canada Post.
⏰
More delivery times, or guaranteed Ground: Purolator
Loomis publishes Express 9:00, 12:00 and 18:00, and its Ground service is not guaranteed. Purolator publishes Express 9AM, 10:30AM and 12PM, Express Evening, and guaranteed timed Ground tiers (Ground 9AM, 10:30AM and Evening). See Loomis vs Purolator.
🗺️
Remote postal codes: check Purolator
Loomis adds an extended area charge for remote points and those served by an authorized agent, and may hand remote deliveries to other carriers. Purolator states it delivers to virtually every postal code in Canada. Price the exact postal code before you book.
📅
Saturday delivery beyond the big cities: UPS or Purolator
Loomis's Saturday delivery is a paid option to and from select cities and postal codes. UPS offers Saturday delivery from some origins to select destinations, and Purolator's Saturday Service covers Canadian and U.S. destinations for a charge. Canada Post does not deliver parcels on weekends.

For a direct head to head rather than a survey, Canpar, Canada Post and Purolator each have their own comparison page, linked in the cards above.

Where Loomis still wins

Where Loomis Still Wins

It is worth restating what makes Loomis the right call in the first place. Five things it does well:

  • A full refund when it is late. On a late Express 9:00, 12:00 or 10:30 shipment, Loomis refunds or credits the transportation charges, for packages up to 75 lb. Since March 2026, Purolator refunds half of the service rate, and only when no piece is over 70 lb.
  • More than twice Canada Post's weight limit. Loomis takes packages up to 68 kg (150 lb), against Canada Post's 30 kg.
  • A free second delivery attempt. Loomis's rate guide includes a second attempt on the next business day at no charge, where Canpar makes one attempt at a home address before the package goes to a SMARTSpot.
  • No cap on shipment size. Loomis sets no limit on the total weight or number of pieces in a shipment. Canpar caps a shipment at 50 pieces and 1,000 lb.
  • Published extended area rates. Loomis publishes its remote postal codes and their charges, so you can check before you ship. The amounts are in our Loomis Surcharges guide.

The guarantee and liability terms are in Loomis's Terms and Conditions, and the full lineup is in our Loomis Services guide. The practical conclusion is not to pick a carrier, it is to stop picking one. Loomis is often right for time-sensitive business parcels, and worth checking against the alternatives for light, valuable parcels, home deliveries and remote postal codes, so compare on every shipment rather than switching.

Frequently Asked Questions About Loomis Alternatives

Who are Loomis's main competitors?

For parcels within Canada and to the U.S., the main alternatives are Canpar, Canada Post, Purolator and UPS. Each wins in different places: Canpar on liability for light parcels, Canada Post on light parcels to homes and PO boxes, with no residential surcharge listed, Purolator on timed deliveries and remote postal codes, and UPS on Saturday delivery from some origins. Compare them on your route before you book.

Is Loomis cheaper than Canpar?

It depends on the shipment. Both are TFI International companies and many of their published fees match exactly, including Saturday delivery, signatures and the oversize charges. Where they differ, Canpar is lower on residential delivery ($4.80 against Loomis's $5.00), address correction and COD, and Loomis is lower on a booked pickup. Canpar also covers more on a light parcel sent without a declared value. The base rate for your exact lane decides it, so compare live rates. Our Loomis vs Canpar guide has the full comparison.

Which carrier takes the heaviest parcels?

Loomis, Canpar, Purolator and UPS all cap a package at 68 kg (150 lb), and Canada Post at 30 kg. One exception: Canpar's rate calculator caps U.S. pieces at 70 lb.

Which Loomis alternative delivers on Saturday?

Several, on different terms. UPS offers Saturday delivery from some origins to select destinations, Purolator charges for its Saturday Service to Canadian and U.S. destinations, and Canpar sells paid Saturday delivery for select destinations. Loomis's own Saturday delivery and pickup is a paid option to and from select cities, and Canada Post does not deliver parcels on weekends. See our Loomis Delivery Times guide.
