Loomis surcharges and fees list

Loomis Surcharges and Fees List

Loomis's base rate is rarely the final price. Fees for extras and exceptions are added on top, then the fuel surcharge, and more than one fee can apply to the same shipment. Watch the unit: some fees are charged per shipment, others per piece, so a five-box shipment can pay a per-piece fee five times.

Most of these fees also carry the fuel surcharge, which the tables mark. Loomis reserves the right to change its rates and charges at any time without prior notice, and account customers' surcharges are subject to their negotiated agreement. Duties and taxes are paid to the government, not to Loomis, so they live on our Loomis Customs & Duties guide. Loomis's charges fall into seven groups:

  • Fuel, demand and carbon surcharges, set by Loomis and changed on its own schedule.
  • Size and weight, triggered by the package itself.
  • Delivery location, triggered by a residential or remote address.
  • Delivery, pickup and signature options, which you choose to add.
  • Address and billing, triggered by how a shipment was addressed, picked up or billed.
  • Specialist handling, for dangerous goods.
  • U.S. and international, for shipments leaving Canada.

Loomis fuel surcharge

The Loomis Fuel Surcharge

Diesel the price it tracks
Weekly how often it changes
Rate + fees charged on

Every Loomis shipment carries a fuel surcharge, a percentage added on top of the price. It changes every week and follows the price of diesel: Loomis uses the average weekly diesel price reported by Kalibrate Technologies, from the week before the new rate starts.

The percentage is applied to more than the base rate. It also covers most of the other fees on this page, such as the transportation surcharges and extra services you add. Only taxes and administrative fees are left out.

Not everyone pays the same percentage. Loomis publishes a standard rate and a higher one for customers with fixed-rate volume discounts, and contract customers may have their own. Shipments leaving Canada on Loomis's international services follow a separate surcharge, based on the price of jet fuel rather than diesel.

Because the number moves weekly, check the current percentage on Loomis's fuel surcharge page. When you quote through Secureship, the applicable surcharge is already inside the rate you see, so you are comparing all-in prices rather than base rates.

Loomis demand and carbon surcharges

Demand and Carbon Surcharges

When Loomis gets busy, shipping can cost more. During high-volume periods it can add demand surcharges (what it used to call peak surcharges), and it decides when they start, change or come back.

These charges sit on top of the usual fees and mostly hit packages that are oversized, overweight or hard to handle. Very high-volume shippers can also see a residential demand surcharge. The amounts and dates change with each notice, so check Loomis's service alerts before you set your budget for a busy period.

Loomis also keeps the option of a carbon surcharge, a percentage of the freight cost that could apply to any shipment. It says it will post the percentage on its website if it ever charges one, and there is none posted today. Either way, a Secureship quote shows what applies to your shipment before you book.

Loomis non-standard and OverMax charges

Non-Standard and OverMax Charges

Big, heavy or awkward packages cost extra with Loomis, and there are two levels. The first is the Non-Standard charge. Your package gets it if any of these is true:

  • Overweight: it weighs more than 70 lb (32 kg).
  • Oversize: its longest side is over 48 in, or its second-longest side is over 32 in.
  • Large Package: its length plus girth is over 130 in, or one side is over 96 in.
  • Special Handling: it isn't packed in a proper box, like a pail, a tire, a liquid container or a crate.

If a package fits more than one of these, you only pay once. The second level is the OverMax fee, and it is much more expensive. It replaces the Non-Standard charge once a package goes over 150 lb, over 108 in on one side, or over 165 in in length plus girth, and it starts at $1,170 per piece within Canada. You'll find every threshold in the size and weight table, and our Loomis Shipping Rates guide shows how the thresholds fit into pricing.

Loomis residential and extended area surcharges

Residential and Extended Area Surcharges

With Loomis, the address matters as well as the package. Two charges depend on where you ship from and to:

  • Residential: you pay it when Loomis picks up from or delivers to a home, even if someone runs a business from that home. Loomis uses the postal code to decide whether an address is residential.
  • Extended Area: you pay it when either end of the shipment is in an area that is harder or more expensive for Loomis to reach, including places it serves through a local agent. If both ends are in an extended area, you pay it twice.

You can check whether a postal code is in an extended area, and what it costs by zone and weight, in Loomis's Extended Area Rate and Zone Guide. For some remote deliveries, Loomis may also hand the package to another carrier to finish the trip. If you often ship to remote postal codes, compare carriers on each shipment before you book.

Loomis delivery, pickup and signature options

Delivery, Pickup and Signature Options

Unlike the other charges on this page, these are options you choose to add, each with its own price:

  • Saturday delivery and pickup: to and from select cities and postal codes, marked on the waybill. Our Loomis Delivery Times guide shows how it works.
  • Pickups: a fee per shipment when you book a pickup, or a weekly fee for a scheduled daily pickup.
  • Signatures: Signature Required, Adult Signature Required (19 or older), and Chain of Signature, which is charged per piece. Without a request, Loomis takes no signature on home deliveries.
  • Return Cheque: Loomis's version of cash on delivery, paid by cheque, bank draft or money order. Loomis does not accept cash.
  • Shipment Value Protection: without it, Loomis's liability is $2.00 per pound, up to $100 per shipment, whichever is less. Declaring more costs extra, up to $5,000.
  • Fragile and returns: Fragile handling, E-Returns, and Collect or Third-Party billing.

What each service includes is in our Loomis Services guide.

Loomis address correction and billing fees

Address Correction and Billing Fees

These fees come from how a shipment was addressed, picked up or billed, not from the package itself, so most of them are avoidable:

  • Address correction: charged per shipment when the address is incorrect, incomplete or illegible, or is a PO box or rural route. Loomis is not liable for a late delivery caused by a bad address.
  • Extra delivery attempts: Loomis's rate guide includes a second attempt on the next business day at no charge, and charges from the third. A redirect out of zone or province is rated as a new shipment.
  • Pickups that aren't ready: if the driver arrives and nothing is ready, or an e-return can't be collected, Loomis charges per attempt. Cancel pickups online to avoid it.
  • Manual waybills and account errors: a manual or preprinted waybill, or a missing or wrong account number, each carries a fee per shipment.
  • Repacking: charged per piece when the original packaging is not good enough to ship.

Loomis also reserves the right to charge fees with no published amount: a Customer Service Administration Fee for requests made by phone, email or live chat, an identification check, a second person to help with delivery, and professional and administrative services.

Loomis U.S. and international charges

U.S. and International Charges

Shipments leaving Canada can pick up their own set of Loomis charges, on top of the international fuel surcharge:

  • Duties and Taxes Paid: an administrative charge when destination duties and taxes are billed to you or a third party instead of the receiver. It does not apply to documents.
  • FDA Prior Notice: Loomis files the notice the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires before any food shipment arrives.
  • Remote Area: for destinations outside the U.S. that are hard to serve, distant or low density.
  • Restricted Access Destination: a percentage of the rate for destinations under trade embargo, on a war and conflict list, or under terrorism threat.
  • Dry Ice: when dry ice keeps goods frozen in transit.

The duties and taxes themselves are paid to the destination government, not to Loomis. Our Loomis Customs & Duties guide explains who pays them and what paperwork you need.

How Secureship helps with Loomis surcharges

How Secureship Helps You Manage Surcharges

You cannot avoid every surcharge, but you can keep them from quietly inflating what you pay. Two things make the biggest difference: the base rate that percentage-based fees are calculated from, and whether you are tied to a single carrier's fee schedule. Secureship helps with both.

⛽
Group rates shrink the fuel surcharge too
The Loomis fuel surcharge is a percentage of your rate and most fees, not a flat fee, so a lower rate means a lower fuel charge on top of it. Secureship's group-negotiated rates lower that rate, so you save twice: once on the rate itself, and again on the fuel surcharge calculated from it.
🔄
You are not locked into one carrier's fee schedule
These surcharges are Loomis's own, and other carriers set theirs differently. Secureship lets you ship with any major carrier from one place, with no accounts, contracts, or minimum volume required.

Frequently Asked Questions About Loomis Surcharges

What is the Loomis fuel surcharge today?

Loomis changes the fuel surcharge every week, based on the price of diesel the week before. You can see the current percentage, and any upcoming change, on Loomis's fuel surcharge page. Customers with fixed-rate volume discounts pay a higher percentage than the standard one. A Secureship quote already includes the surcharge, so you don't need to work it out yourself.

How much is the Loomis residential surcharge?

$5.00 per shipment, plus the fuel surcharge, as of Loomis's 2026 rate guide. It applies to a pickup or delivery at a home, including a business run from a home, and Loomis decides which addresses count as residential by postal code.

Does Loomis charge extra for remote areas?

Yes. Loomis adds an Extended Area Surcharge when the origin or destination is in its extended area or is served by an authorized agent, and it is charged once for each end. Loomis publishes the postal codes and rates in its Extended Area Rate and Zone Guide: in the October 2026 edition, the charge runs from $5.23 for a 1 lb package in zone 1 to $562.29 for 100 lb in zone 7. To see the all-in price, compare carriers before you book.

What is the Loomis address correction fee?

$20.00 per shipment, plus the fuel surcharge. Loomis charges it when the address is incomplete, incorrect or illegible, or is a PO box or rural route address, and it tries to find the right address to complete the delivery. Loomis is not liable for missing its delivery time when the address is wrong, so checking the postal code and street address before you ship avoids both the fee and the delay.

What happens if my Loomis package is too big or too heavy?

It moves into a higher charge bracket. Past 48 in on the longest side, 32 in on the second side, or 70 lb, a non-standard charge applies; past 108 in, 165 in in length plus girth, or 150 lb, the OverMax fee is $1,170 or more per piece within Canada. Our Loomis Shipping Rates guide explains the thresholds.

Does Loomis have a peak season surcharge?

Yes, Loomis calls them demand surcharges. They apply during periods of high volume, high demand for capacity and higher operating costs, and Loomis decides when to add, reassess or reinstate them. They are added on top of existing charges, mainly for oversized, overweight and hard-to-handle packages, and a residential demand surcharge can apply to very high-volume shippers. Check Loomis's service alerts for the current notice and dates.
